MEDIA ADVISORY – For immediate release

The presentation of health coalition evidence to defend public health care begins Monday with expert testimony

Who: Marie-Claude Prémont, PhD Law

Where: Vancouver Supreme Court, 800 Smithe Street

What: The intervenor group representing patients, doctors, and the public who support universal health care will present expert evidence before the court in the ongoing lawsuit brought by Cambie Corporation against the government of British Columbia.

Marie-Claude Prémont, a well-respected Professor of Law at the École Nationale d’Administration Publique, will testify on how Canada’s laws protecting universal access to health care ensures that patients can get care regardless of their ability to pay. She will also give evidence on the effect of Chaoulli v. Quebec on the public delivery of health care in Quebec.

When: Monday, May 13, starting at 10:00am (Pacific Time)

Why: While this case is now at the BC Supreme Court, its implications for the Canadian health care system are dire. If successful, this lawsuit could lead us down the path to an American-style two-tier health care system by striking down provisions that protect equal accessibility and universality.

The BC Health Coalition, Canadian Doctors for Medicare, two individual patients and two individual doctors are intervenors in the case.

In Ottawa, Canadian Health Coalition Director of Policy and Advocacy, Melanie Benard is available for comment.
